The centre's turtle programmes are the highlight. In nesting season, roughly late spring through summer, educators lead ticketed evening turtle walks when nesting females come ashore, and these book out early; outside that season the hospital patients are the stars, often loggerheads and green turtles recovering from boat strikes, fishing-line injuries or illness. Signs at each tank explain how the animal arrived and what its treatment involves, which makes the visit a quietly powerful lesson for children. The centre has done this work since it opened in 1984 on land first described in 1870 as the Boca Raton Hammock. Its dedicated sea-turtle rehabilitation facility followed in 2010, and it is one of six Florida centres that accept turtles with fibropapillomatosis, the tumour disease that afflicts green turtles in particular. Staff and volunteers also monitor about five miles of Boca Raton's nesting beach.

The hammock boardwalk is short but rewarding, shaded and full of birds and butterflies, and the tower gives one of the few elevated views on this flat coast. Mornings bring cooler temperatures and more wildlife; arriving early also helps with the limited parking. Groups of ten or more need advance reservations. Do not skip the Florida Atlantic University research facility on site: FAU biologists study sea-turtle behaviour, how sharks sense their surroundings and how salinity affects seagrass, and visitors can look in and often talk with the researchers. The centre is run by the City of Boca Raton with the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District and the nonprofit Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards.

Pair it with Red Reef Park's beach and snorkelling next door, or make a north-county day with a stop at the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse on a tour date. It is a strong rainy-season backup too: the indoor exhibits and aquariums carry the visit when afternoon storms close the boardwalk. Next door, Red Reef Park has a shallow reef a short swim off the beach that suits snorkelling families on calm days, which makes a natural second stop, and the beachfront parks of Boca Raton line the same barrier island for a lunch-and-swim afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gumbo Limbo free?

Yes. General admission is free and donations are welcome. Groups of ten or more need reservations and pay fees.

Can I see sea turtles?

Yes. The centre rehabilitates sick and injured turtles in outdoor tanks that visitors can view, with signs explaining each patient's story. Patients come and go as they recover and are released, so the line-up changes from one visit to the next.

How far is it from Fort Lauderdale?

About thirty minutes north by car, on the barrier island in Boca Raton.

What are the hours?

The nature centre and aquariums keep daytime hours, shorter on Mondays; the boardwalk, trails and tower open early and close at sunset. Nesting-season turtle walks are ticketed separately and sell out early.

Where do I park?

Limited free parking is reserved for centre visitors; metered beach parking is nearby at Red Reef Park.
